Advent Devotional: David Lessner

Advent/Christmas Resources - The Presbyterian Church in Canada

This Advent we are asking people to respond to one or both of these questions:

“When or where have you felt the presence of God most closely?”

“Who has shown you that God is near to you?”

This is what David Lessner, had to say:

“2 Corinthians 3:16 reads, “but when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed.”

I can think of many times where the veil has “become thin” as it seems so clear that I’m in God’s presence. Every candlelight worship when we light up the darkness with communal love and light, or in the summer at Camp Bridgeport when the sunlight is fading right behind an old, rugged cross and the body of Christ is singing and smiling together.

I think I could name specific people, but I feel God’s presence the most when I’m surrounded by others who are also seeking God’s presence, and who want to live in God’s love together. Each Sunday morning, when we come together to worship, laugh, eat donuts, and more it feels like a small taste of heaven – and helps me see other “thin veil” moments during the course of “normal” events.

To celebrate Christmas is to celebrate the presence of God with us – all of us – and I’m thankful I have so many to share this with.”
