The prevailing ethos of the world that the feeding of the 5,000 is set against is “scarcity.” Even against the backdrop of the abundant feast of Passover, in this wilderness spot “across the Sea of Galilee,” Philip can’t imagine where and how they would ever have enough to feed everyone. In Exodus and Numbers, Moses constantly has to deal with this problem, just as Jesus does in John 6. Only Moses’ response is to complain about the need, while Jesus’ response is to offer what they have. How would our perspective change if we began to think of every little bit as a blessing, and if that would help us change our perspective as to what “enough” is?
