Who do you get your ideas from?
That’s a question I assume the algorithm producers of social media and google searches are asking about us with each update they make. They want to keep our attention by promoting those ideas we get excited about or relate to, and those people who rise to the top of your algorithm are called “influencers.”
- They influence vacation destinations.
- They influence clothing trends.
- They influence bad habits.
- There’s even one guy who skis with his cat on his shoulders, and now my kids are obsessed with getting our cats little ski goggles.
Who influences you?
“…and a little child shall lead them.” (Isaiah 11:7b NRSV)
We have an event coming up to honor the pets that influence us. Sunday, October 9 at 4 p.m. we’ll have our annual Blessing of the Animals celebration in the south parking lot. It’s a tradition dating back to St. Francis of Assisi and recognizes how God speaks through all of creation, but our 4th and 5th grade Sunday school class had another idea.
Why just bless them with a prayer when we could bless them with a present?
In our discipleship flow for young people, the 4th and 5th grade curriculum is designed to introduce the importance of the church for the community. As they discussed, the idea that the church exists to bless the community came to the forefront and they thought we could do more for the animals. So, we’re inviting you to not only bring your favorite furry friend, but also to bring a bag of food, a toy, a leash, or other useful items that the Allen Animal Shelter can use to love those furry friends who are awaiting a home.
What better people to be influenced by then our faithful children with their big imaginations and hearts?
“Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever becomes like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.” (Matthew 18:3-4 NRSV)
So, who influences you?
And, who might you influence?
Peace,
David Lessner
