Incarnation isn’t unique to Christianity. The Greek gods often took the form of humans, and the same happens within Hinduism, but across religious traditions the importance is the same – God comes near. In a world where God can seem distant – through hard times or our own priorities – the Incarnation expresses to us God’s never-wavering commitment to be close, to guide, and give a tangible reality to an abstract concept. Now, the difference between Jesus and those other examples? Jesus and God are one, not manifestations, and not coming for their own glory – but ours. Not only does the incarnation express God’s love for us, it helps us know how to best love others.
