Advent Day 25

Posted in Deep Thoughts

We asked some people at Creekwood to answer one of two questions:
“What is your favorite Christmas carol,
and what does it tell you about God?”
or
“How do you hear God speaking in the world today?”
We hope you find hope, love, joy, and peace as you hear God speak through these daily devotional reflections.

One of the things that makes Christmas such a memorable time of year is the music. The songs get stuck in our heads and we can often recite the words without even thinking. My favorite Christmas carol and the one I always hope to hear is, “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”.

This carol was written by Charles Wesley more than 200 years ago and directly points people to the Savior.
In the first stanza, we are called to listen to the angels as they sang a song of glory to God and a song of peace on earth. The carol explains how this peace has come to all of us. It comes when God and humanity are reconciled through the work of Jesus. Therefore, all the nations should rise and sing the good news, which is Christ is the King. The second stanza addresses the mystery of Christ being fully divine and fully human and the good news in it. The final stanza tells of the power of Christ. He is the one who gives us peace that is beyond anything this world can offer.
I always love when the congregation belts out the chorus
“Hark! the herald angels sing,
Glory to the Newborn King!”  This fills me with Christmas cheer and the Peace we are offered through Jesus.
