Juneteenth

June 19

Creekwood - Juneteenth

Juneteenth is a Federal Holiday enacted in 2021.

The significance of Juneteenth goes back to 1865.

It signified the day when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, TX, and declared that all slaves had been freed. It took two years for the information to make it to Galveston after Abraham Lincoln had read his Emancipation Proclamation.

Although it has been celebrated every year since 1865 with our African-American brothers and sisters, it has not been widely recognized in other ethnicities.

Here are some external resources where you can not only find out more about the history of Juneteenth but also some suggestions on how you can celebrate freedom in your communities.
