I am a quite a big Wesleyan nerd, so obviously I chose a Charles Wesley hymn titled “Come Thou Long-Expected Jesus.”
What the hymn tells me about God is that God is about liberation, seeking to free us, all people, from the constraints of fear and sin to become who we were/are meant to be – children of God. Also, I think the hymn serves as a reminder – that in Advent God invites us to focus on what’s most important, welcoming that “Joy of every longing heart” in ourselves, our relationships, just as we welcome the birth of Christ who extends that freedom and joy to all persons.
